Mungkin kita yang biasa memperhatikan dialog atau percakapan orang-orang yang berbahasa Inggris sering mendengar istilah “fuck” bukan? Sesungguhnya istilah ini bermakna sangat kasar—kalau tidak bisa dibilang jorok–. karena itu sangat dilarang keras bagi kita untuk menggunakannya agar jangan sampai menimbulkan ketersinggungan bagi lawan bicara kita. Namun kenyataannya, dalam lirik-lirik lagu maupun dialog-dialog film barat, masih sering kita menjumpai kata tersebut diucapkan. Lalu, mengapa mereka boleh menggunakannya sementara kita tidak? Mungkin karena kata tersebut berasal dari bahasa dan budaya mereka, jadi sangat wajar bila mereka lebih paham bagaimana dan di mana harus mengucapkannya agar tidak menimbulkan efek sarkastik yang terlalu berlebihan. Jika kita yang coba menggunakannya, yang ditakutkan adalah kekeliruan dalam menempatkan kata tersebut sesuai konteksnya. Karena itu kita harus berhati-hati menggunakannya. Harus diakui bahwa kata itu, bagi penutur aslinya sekalipun, sebenarnya sangat tabu untuk diucapkan. Namun seiring perkembangan zaman, kata “fuck” telah mengalami pergeseran makna. Mungkin dalam bahasa Indonesia, kita mengenal fenomena tersebut sebagai “ameliorasi” (perubahan makna suatu kata dari yang dahulu kasar, lalu semakin lama akhirnya maknanya menjadi semakin biasa saja.
